If your efficiency measure is cost per pound of cargo, then I'm sure a fully-loaded plane is more efficient.
For example, suppose you weigh 150 pounds, and it costs you $1.50 of gas to drive some place. That's 1 cent per pound for the trip. If 3 other people ride with you, it takes $2.00 of gas to transport 600 pounds.. That's 1/3 cent per pound.
