Can GM eliminate the UAW?
The UAW had a useful purpose in the 30's & 40's, but that time has past. Today they basically hold corporations hostage until they give up concessions that the workers want. In successful businesses, executives make decisions that are in the best interest of the business and stock holders. It would seem the Unions are tied to businesses that are near bankruptcy like the airlines and American car companies. I don't know of any successful business models that say let the low people on the totem pole impact employee compensation, benefits, and hire/fire decisions. One look at the non union businesses and you will see that employers who have high wages and benefits also have highly qualified employees. And vise versa. (You see they fire under qualified people) If they don't like their compensation, they find a better job. If they can’t get a better job, then they are probably paid what they are worth. Unions however support incompetent employees who are significantly overpaid.
As soon as all unions are gone, you'll see an end to good working class jobs. You think non-unions companies will continue to offer benefits that compete with unions once there is no union? You're wrong, they only do that to keep people from bolting to a union job the first chance they get. The big benfit of a union job is job security and people can argue til armageddon about that.
But once there is no unions, you'd see a gradual decline in benefits across an entire industry.
The airlines refuse to wake up and charge the right amount for tickets, that's why they are having trouble. The US auto industry is behind the curve on what people want. You really think they want bigger and bigger trucks and SUV's? How about some cars that people want? If GM or Ford built a car that equalled or bettered the Accord or Camry in quality and style they would not have money problems either.
Plus, what about those board members making 400 million in pay and compensation? What do they do for that? It's obvious they don't make a ton of money for the company...
