why police want you out of your house?

If the police have the intention of arresting you, why do they want to wait until you leave your house? Or try to lure you out of your house?

Maybe I watch too much TV, but I got the same feeling from the Gates arrest in Cambridge. (This is a general question, not just tied to the Gates situation.)

It is a matter of officer safety. If the suspect becomes combative it is much easier to deal with them outside. Inside the house are too many things that a suspect may use to attack the officer with.
