Trout Steelhead
Do you know how to catch steelhead trout?
I live near a place where you can fish the river for steelhead !But everytime I go everyone else seems to catch one, so I wanted to know if any one had any tips on bait, how to string the hook on the line and what I might be doing wrong.
I have caught the majority of my steelhead either on a fly while Fly Fishing, drifting spawn under a bobber or throwing a smaller size spinner. Spawn works well after the Chinook have moved up the river as the steelhead will trail behind and eat free floating eggs. I haven't done very well with dries or skaters but have had very good luck with egg patterns and nymph patterns. Drifting a spawn sac also works very well, but be sure its not too large. You can either drift it using a bobber in fairly level areas or bounce it along the bottom in areas that are more varied. Don't use too much weight to get to the bottom, just enough to touch it. It needs to drift naturally, too much weight and it wont and steelhead will just look at it.
