What is a good Fly Tying kit?
I've recently started Fly Fishing and now I'd like to start trying to tie my own flies. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good-quality fly Tying Kit that a beginner could start with. I guess the other option is putting together a "kit" myself. I'd like to spend around $150 or less on this. If anyone has any advice for a beginning fly tier it would be greatly appreciated.
my advice stay away from kits theres a few nice ones out there but they are still not worth it.
get a nice vice similar to this: http://griffinenterprisesinc.com/vises.html look at the Superior 2A Vise its a little expensive but its a good vice by a GREAT company its made in the usa and has a lifetime warantee i have a Griffin black foot mongoose vise and its amazing you can upgrade later on but that one would last you a very long time (i started out on a cheap $20 dollar vise from cabelas and it worked but it was a pain in the ass)
then you need a bobbin: any will work but get one with a ceramic tube it wont fray and cut thread so easy. i started out with a metal bobin and it cut my thread so much i was forced to upgrade. and a pair or scissors anything will work to get you started just the finer the point the better off you are.
then pick a few flys that you fish a lot a recomend Woolly Buggers, phesant Tail Nymphs, hares ears nymphs, and maybe some basic dry flys like a griffiths gnat.
Woolly buggers you need some Hooks Size 10 would be good to start on ($5), lead weight to make them sink ($3-$6), Chenile ($1 for 3 or 4 yards) Marabou for the tail ($3 for a decent bag that will tie at least 15 buggers), Hackle ($5 for again at least 15 flys) bugger hackle is very cheap when compared to Dry Fly hackle.
phesant tail nymphs: size 16 nymph hooks (again $5) phesant tail ($7 for a whole tail at cabelas that will last a very long time) peacock herl ($2 for a big bag that will last a fairly long time as well) and copper wire which i cant think of the price but i think its $3
Hares Ears: same as phesant tail except you need some rabbit dubbing and/or a rabbit mask which will last a fairly long time and some Turkey Feathers to make a wing case.
Griffiths Gnat: size 16 dry Fly Hooks ($5) you already have peacock herl, and some grizzly dry Fly Hackle (anywehre from $20-$80)
I buy a lot of my materials at sportsmans warehouse because they are pretty cheap and they have 50 hooks for 5 bucks which is a good price.
then later on down the road you will want to purchase a whip finisher, a hackle pliers, a Hair Stacker, a bodkin, some head cement (head cement helps make your flys bomb proof and keeps the thread together when finishing off a fly but it isnt needed) and then you can always get more tools like a dubing loop twister but dont worry about that its a hard thing to get down.
Oh and dont forget youtube is a wonderful way to see how to tie flys so go there watch some videos and look for patterns you want to try. couldnt and wont hurt to pick up a book thats full of patterns and how to tie them.
