Can a cash register ink ribbon be re-inked?
Its expensive and wasteful to keep dumping these ribbons. We use standard spool ribbons and want to know the method and specific ink needed for re-inking them ourselves.
They can be renewed to some extent. Much of the ink on the ribbons dries up, although most of it is transferred to the paper. spraying the old ribbon with WD40 dissolves the dried up ink and the ribbon will work again. You should spray the oil as evenly as possible and let the ribbon alone for a few days while the oil penetrates throughout the ribbon. Too much oil, and the ribbon will smear on the paper. Eventually, you will have to discard the ribbon.
