Saltwater Fly

sick fish saltwater?
Ok well I have 2 fishes that are sick a coral beuty and a clownfish (percula). One morning I wake up and both fish are completely covered in somesort of white specks, I began to worry. Then I heard of fresh water dipping? Can anyone have some info on that please I would like to try it. Then today I seen that the majority of the specks were gone just in one day I'm confused. when I place my hands in the water and wave my fingers back n forth towards the corals and the live rocks and theese bunch of small white specks come flying out the rocks can this be the same specks on their bodies due to the fishes mucus?? Or a parasite??
The white spots could be a number of things. But from your question in details, these white spots is called Cryptocaryon irritans which is marine ich. It is a pest, and if the life cycle speeds up, and you don't do anything about it, the fishtank will be infested with these pests. Your fish can die because what these parasites do is they bury into the skin and they eventually will get to the gills of the fish. This parasite can cause the fish to lose their appetite and further more, they can suffocate the fish.
When all the ich is off of the fish, this is the best time to treat the tank if you have fish only tank. If you have live rocks and corals along with invertebrates, you must take the fish out and quarantine them in another tank. Without any hosts in the tank, within one month all the ich will eventually die.
There are many methods of treating marine ich, you can use Copper sulfate, Formaldehyde or formalin. These chemicals are very toxic and you have to use care when treating the fish.
You can also use Garlic enriched flakes, which I bought from ebay from a store called newwavefish. He is excellent and the shipping is superfast.
Hyposalinity is the safest treatment. Hyposalinity is reducing the salinity level to 1.010-1.009. You should gradually reduce the salinity over 3 days. You should not do it all at once, otherwise, you may kill your fish. Hyposalinity should be also treated over a period of 30 days or more. What Hyposalinity does is reduce the stress on the fish. Marine ich tends to attack fishes that are stressing.
As for treating marine ich with chemicals, you should treat when you turn off the lights, because at night, marine ich tends to fall off of the fish to look for new hosts or to reproduce.
Many people suggest using a heater for the aquarium and asks you to make the temperature to 85 degrees. However, heating the water will NOT kill the ich, it only speeds up the lifecycle of the ich and it will reproduce at a faster rate which will infest the water. As an experienced in marine aquariums, I will not recommend this.
The UV sterilizer will not get everything. You also can purchase a Diatom filter, it can also help remove some of the free floating marine ich, but not all.
There are many ways to fight ich, but try not to use chemicals first, try other alternatives, you can research marine ich online at wikipedia or about.com
Anyways, I hope this helps and Good Luck
Frequent water changes like every 2-3 days may help a bit, but you will not get all of the ich out of the water. You also can purchase a UV Sterilizer, but the reason why people don't like this is because the UV Sterilizer can also kill the necessary bacteria that grows in the water.
