Re: Fly Rods for trout, bass and brim, Sage, St. Croix or Temple Fork Outfitters? Which one is higher qual?
There are three top of the line rod manufacturers in the US: Sage; Winston; Thomas &Thomas.
Sage still makes all of it's rods here in the US.
Winston imports their lower end rods but still makes their top of the line here.
I am not sure about Thomas & Thomas rods, if they are all made here or some imported.
These rods are in my humble opinion the best rods you can buy. Period. Since I live in Washington State and not too far from Bainbridge Island, the home of Sage, I use all Sage rods. If I ever break one I just drive up to Bainbridge Island and get a new part. Not only that, I really like the way they cast and I have tried many other fly rods.
St. Croix is also a very good manufacturer of fly rods. Their top of the line rods, priced almost as much as Sage rods, are still made here in the US. I believe their entry level rods are imported. A lot of people use St. Croix and enjoy them.
Temple Fork Outfitters is strictly imported.
Now would be a good time to point out that just because a rod is imported from China or Korea or where ever, it should not be considered a bad or inferior rod. The manufacturers over there will produce a Fly Rod to the exact specifications the importer here in the US wants. If the importer requests a less expensive and possibly inferior rod, that is what they will produce. Or, they can produce some great fly rods, if that is what the importer wants.
An example of this is the Redington fly rod. The company, also based on Bainbridge Island, is owned by Sage and imports all of it's fly rods. But they have the same life time warranty of Sage fly rods. That means Redington is importing a high quality fly rod.
I have some friends that have TFO's but I have heard rumors that they tend to break maybe when they shouldn't. I am not sure about that. However, TFO's does offer a limited warranty.
Of the ones you listed, you can't go wrong with Sage and you most likely would also enjoy the St. Croix.
If you have a fly shop near you and they carry these rods, compare them while actually casting. If you do that then please buy the rod from the fly shop.
