How can I prune a grape vine?
I am in the process of restoring an overgrown farm property. I have a couple large Concord grape vines that are decades old and unmanagable. Can I cut the trunk at arbor height, approximately 8' from the ground or is this too high on the trunk for it to regrow without rot issues? I would do this in winter when the vine is dormant.
You want to Prune when the vine is dormant, but just before it is time for it to break buds. In zone6 that would be April 7 that would be March, in zone 8 it would be Feb.
Cut the vine any height you want. You can cut the vine off even with the ground if there are buds that low and it wouldn't hurt the vine. Just be sure to leave vine with buds so it will grow new canes.
Shaping a vine that hasn't been cared for is a two winter job. Pick the existing Canes you want to keep on the Arbor. Leave them uncut the first year you are pruning. Cut the rest of the canes back to 3 buds from the main lateral canes. These three buds will bear your grapes. Pick some new canes for training where you want them, and cut the old canes back to three buds next winter.
