Gold Fly
Can i train my blue and gold macaw to fly and come back?
I have a blue and gold macaw and i have owned her for the past 4-5 years (so we're quite close) She's 6 years old and healthy but i recently let her wings grow out. (They used to be clipped every week.) Just the other week, she was outside because it was nice and sunny, but something scared her and she took off flying. She flew across the road but stopped before she ran into a house. (It gave me such a fright!!! I thought i'd lost my bird) But the thing is, has scared as i was that i would never see her again, i was happy that she flew! (First time) So now i want to know is it possible to train her to fly, but come back? Or to fly but not too far away? I don't care if she flies in the house (our living room has cathedral ceilings, so she has room) but now im scared to take her outside on a nice day. I want her to fly, and be a bird, but i don't want to lose her. What should i do?
There is a yahoo group that I belong to called 'parrotrecalltraining" (parrot recall training) and the people in there have taught their birds recall training.
I have a Severe Macaw that is trained only because if the event ever occurred where he accidentally got outside or was in any type of danger, I want him to know to come to me when he is called. I would NEVER take my birds out and voluntarily 'free flight' them. The risk of hawks, cars, cats, dogs etc are far too great for a pet bird in an environment he has no survivor knowledge in.
