How important is the rod/reel when fishing?

Well my friend dished out $900 for a fishing rod. People always say how a good rod is very important. But in my opinion it has little importance. Of course you need a good enough rod to get the fish on the beach, but a rod won't make the fish bite.

I agree, (to a certain degree), with your hypothesis.

A guy with a $40 combo can catch as many fish as a guy with a $400 outfit.

(The fish don't know what kind of rod & reel you own!)

HOWEVER, there are some major differences in your $25 rod and a $300 St. Croix.

#1. A $300 rod will be 70% lighter than a $25-$90 rod, thus making it EXTREMELY sensitive comparably. A 70% more sensitive rod will transmit strikes easier allowing the fisherman a tremendous advantage over an angler fishing with a $25 "stick", (lol).

#2. Durability- St. Croix, G. Loomis, Sage, Etc (all your most expensive rods) generally have a LIFETIME warranty, (and in some cases, all you have to do to get your new rod is to send in your old, broken one to the company). Rods wear out quicker than reels. Good rods wear out slower, (period).

Have you ever heard the expression," The difference is like night and day!"

Try fishing with your friends outfit and FEEL the difference! It's gonna feel like......well you know.......

Reels?

I don't even know of any decent reel's that are under $50!

Why would someone spend more than $50 for a reel??

1. As a reel escalates in price the quality of the materials and design escalates.

A $200-$500 reel will be 50-60% "smoother", (which will transmit strikes easier through the reel), have a 50-60% better drag system, be made out of better, more non-corrosive materials and generally be nicer to fish with over a $50 reel.

Do you think there's a difference between a Ford Ranger and a Lamborghini Diablo???
