Double Taper
What is the proper procedure for determining bench end play in double taper roller bearings?
There is a TDO bearing that is a set up with a tapered cup for thrust in both directions....the first bearing goes on the shaft to the edge of the race cage and shoulder. Then the cup then the outer bearing .The proper amount of end play is rather important but in the first few moments there is a grease problem between the bearing surface and the inner race..Jog or manually run the machine a very low RPM for a minute or two. Then check the play between the outermost race and the flat washer that holds the bearing in...this can be done with plasti-guage (a crushable plastic that you mic later to find clearances) the play should be withing the limits of the bearings manufactures recommendations..generally .001 inch...However in actual practice designeres tend to hold the pressure on the system with a nut (x-fine thd) and a cotter lock pin. So in real world applications the lift or threads per inch of the bolt vs the size of the pin slot is a determining factor...if one 16th turn (16 slots in the nut=32 incriments) of a 24 thd per inch threaded bolt is calculated for a 1" bolt do it this way..... 24 thrds x 3.14159 /32 x 24=.0981" so you can see real quick that the slots need to be as close a tolerance as the endplay ...What i generally do is run the nut up till the whole thing will not turn and then back off untill there is an ability to rotate with a small amount of pressure...Of course if your doing this with a small bearing no problem but an 18" Timken TDO on a drive shaft of a battle ship is a little different..and of course so is the amount of play.....Hope i helped with this a little....From the E
