How to build flood defences from risk of flooding stream?
My house has a stream that runs through the garden and joins a larger brook that runs along side the house.The brook runs at a fast rate as it is 95 metres above sea level.The area is not a flood plain either.
I have been made aware that the house flooded in 2000 by the stream.Unfortunatly the stream passes through a culvert under the road so if this blocks or the water flow exceeds the volume of the culvert the stream will flood.
I have decided to build a levee along the Stream Bank that runs through my garden and along the side of my house to the front garden wall.
I am hoping this should offer a good flood defence sollution if the stream backs up and floods.
Has anyone got any past experience or helpfull hints or other sollutions?
I have a similiar problem with a brook running through my garden. In addition to flooding we had incidents of sewage entering the brook. As a result of ongoing pollution we formed an community group and involved the local water supplier, county council, EA, highways etc. There are many models of SUDs around and the goverment is keen on these. check out the website: Ruscombe Brook Action Group (rbag.org.uk) Water 21 is very helpful in exploring urban drainage options.
